Leadership Skills Training
Training Provider: Common Compass

The focus of this training will be:
– Understanding the role of emotionally intelligent leadership in the workplace and developing skills in how to handle these dilemmas
– Developing communication skills for effective problem solving in workplace culture
– Understanding how inclusion can promote an effective workplace culture
– Understanding and implementing various leadership styles and approaches

Training time is from 9:00am-2:30pm.

Training will take place at St. Benedict Secondary School

Lunch is provided.
You will earn 2 elective certification(s).

October 15 & 16, 2019
GPS Training
Shades Mill, Cambridge

Locating points on a map and understanding how GPS works is a very valuable skill. Not only does it help you to measure and locate objects from a distance, but you will also learn about
topographical maps, positioning, and how GPS works in this 2 day training session.

You must attend on both days to earn your certification.

Lunch is provided.
You will earn 1 certification.

Standard First Aid & CPR Level C Training
St. John’s Ambulance, Cambridge

Every employer wants to have a safe worker! Take this certification to learn how to assist other’s when in need.
Learn how to perform: adult, child and infant CPR, choking procedures for all ages, how to use barrier devices, AED (Automated External Defibrillation), and more.

Plus, add this training to your resume, as it will help you find a part time job!

Earn up to two SHSM certifications!

You must attend on both days to earn your certifications!

Training time is: 8:30 am – 3:00pm

Event Coordination Training
Conestoga College, Kitchener

You will learn how to co-ordinate events by understanding what is needed for short and long term event planning. Remember! This can include everything from fundraising events, music festivals, the Olympics, Oktoberfest and so much more! By taking this training you will learn how to effectively plan and co-ordinate events.

Plus! You will understand how tourism is essential to sport, recreational, leisure and business purposes.

Training time is: 9:00 am – 2:00pm

Food Handling Certification
Conestoga College, Kitchener

Build your knowledge and improve your safe food handling skills to earn a Region of Waterloo Public Health Safety Food Handlers Wallet Card. A minimum of 70% is required to earn the certificate. Food safety training is recommended for all persons who work in institutions, retail, restaurant or wholesale food services.

Training time is: 9:00 am – 2:00pm

March 3, 2020
Knife Skills and Restaurant Operations
Conestoga College- Waterloo Campus

Join the Chefs at Conestoga College Culinary Arts to learn the essentials of knife skills. You will be taught how to handle, sharpen and care for a knife in the proper way.
Learn how to cut fruits and vegetables into the classic shapes of Dice, Slice, Julienne, Batonnet, Brunoise and Paysanne.

After your lunch, you will be exposed to restaurant operations include all of the behind the scenes items you do for your guests, including kitchen and dining room systems like cost, inventory, portion, and waste control and prep and production.

BONUS EXPERIENCE! Eat lunch in Bloom Restaurant, a live student-run classroom and upscale dining experience located at the campus (which is part of the Hospitality curriculum).

Hospitality Workshops with University of Guelph
University of Guelph, Guelph

Upon arrival you will receive a Campus tour of the University of Guelph and learn about the university experience. Throughout your day on campus you will also participate in two workshops lead by University Professors.

Workshop 1: The Gluten Project
A short presentation on the Department of Food Science  is followed by hands-on activities including a sensory test with gluten-containing and gluten-free bread. The differences in texture and structure are discussed in relation to the role gluten plays in cereal processing.  Students will compare the properties of wheat flour to other cereal flours and discuss the negative perceptions gluten.

Workshop 2: Hospitality

Experience a tour through the University of Guelph Food Labs and the LANG Business building. Students will participate in a 45 minute interactive activity exploring how sustainability impacts various sectors.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

!!! SHSM will cover the cost of your CPR Level C & Standard First Aid!!!

*please note that the cost of the blended learning course will not be covered. Please call St. John Ambulance to register for the two-day course to take advantage of this certification free of cost.*

1. Call St. John’s Ambulance below to set up a training session (you cannot register online if SHSM is to pay for the training).

2. You MUST CALL St. John’s Ambulance (do not register online) to inform them:
– your name & school
– you’re a student of the Specialist High Skills Major program
– you’re a student with the Waterloo Catholic School Board
– you need CPR Level C & Standard First Aid

3. Attend training on the date you selected.
*NOTE: You will be charged a fee if you do not attend

4. St. John’s will invoice the SHSM program. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO PAY, and your training will be listed on your progress report by the end of the summer!

HOW DOES IT WORK?

– Name, school, major and type of training you’d like to take

3. Wait three days for the activation and then complete online training on your own time.

4. Email SHSM@wcdsb.ca to confirm you’ve completed training
(It may take up to two weeks for it to appear on your SHSM record)
