Safe Food Handling Certification
In Your Hospitality Class
Speak to your teacher today!

Interested in nutrition, food or hospitality?
The Safe Food Handling Certification will allow you to work with food safely in the kitchens of retirement homes, day cares and more.

If you are taking a Hospitality course this semester, you should receive safe food handling training during class (and SHSM will cover the cost of the certification issued from the Region of Public Health)!

Talk to your Hospitality Teacher about this training session!

Medical Science: Genes & Vaccines Training
University of Waterloo

Come and experience medical science on campus with the University of Waterloo! This interactive day includes hands on experiments including learning techniques to interpret and analyze DNA in the ‘Gels & Genes’ workshop. In the ‘Let’s Talk Cancer’ workshop, you will explore the biology of cancer and emerging treatments including problem solving to develop a cancer treatment. Lastly, you will discuss an outbreak of a virus and discuss vaccines and their usefulness.

Bus departs at 8:10am and returns by 3:30pm
Training time runs from 9:30am-2:45pm

Lunch is provided.

Makeup for Film
TIFF Bell Lightbox, Toronto

Learn from the experts in the industry on how to use tools and techniques for makeup application for film!
Students will experiment with creating makeup effects from a given script based on a Sci-Fi and/or Fantasy theme.

In the afternoon, you will visit Glow Academy to learn about various careers within the Makeup and Cosmetology industry.

Due to limited spaces, you will be required to explain in a few sentences why you believe this would be helpful to your future career when you click the sign up button.

Bus departs at 8:30am and returns by 3:30pm.

Infection Control Training
St. John Ambulance, Cambridge

During this 1/2 day morning session with St. John’s Ambulance, you will learn the different types of infections you might be exposed to in the health & wellness field. Understand how viruses and bacteria can enter your system.
Participate in hands-on activities and demonstrations as you will learn how to properly take off “contaminated” gloves, face masks and gowns. Plus, understand how to properly wash your hands of viruses and bacteria (and understand why anti-bacterial lotion isn’t your best defense!).

Bus departs at 8:05am and returns by 11:50pm
Training time runs from 8:30am-11:30am

Lunch is provided.
You will earn 1 compulsory certification.

Leadership, Problem Solving & Communication Skills Training
KW YMCA Outdoor Centre, St. Clements

During this one day session, you will work in groups focusing on initiative tasks which include leadership, problem solving & communication to build on these skills. Outdoor education staff will challenge you to understand how these 3 skills are connected, how they affect the workplace and other business situations.
You will also get a chance to participate in low and high rope tasks!

Bus departs at 8:00am and returns by 3:05pm

Concussion Awareness Training
Waterloo Sports Medicine

Are you interested to learn how the brain reacts to a concussion? Meet Mike Clermont, Physiotherapist from Waterloo Sports Medicine who has extensive training in all sports related Injuries. Mr. Clermont will facilitate this workshop to talk about what concussions are, how they happen and the symptoms. You will also focus on the recognition and assessment tools that health providers use. Prevention strategies and return to play guidelines will also be examined and explained.

Training is held at St. Benedict CSS. Students should meet at the beginning of period 2 in Guidance Room 111.  Training time runs from 9:30am-1:30pm

Kinesiology (KIN) Lab Day
University of Waterloo

Kinesiology Lab Days is an annual high school outreach event for grade 11 & 12 students. This one-day program consists of mini-laboratory sessions on assessing, treating, and preventing movement-related illness and injury.

Students will be introduced to equipment and techniques used in many of Waterloo’s state-of-the-art kinesiology research and teaching labs. Lab Days experiences range from learning about athletic taping, concussions, stroke, cardio-vascular health, biomchanics and even measuring breath-by-breath oxygen uptake.

This hands-on workshop will get you thinking about how you treat others as you work through scenarios and situations about ethical dilemmas.

Dementia Training
Conestoga College

Dementia is a common disorder which affects brain functions among older adults. You will explore symptoms, diagnosis and learn how it affects memory, thinking, language and behaviour. This interactive lecture will include videos, powerpoint and group activities.

In the afternoon, you will participate in many hands-on activities where you will learn how to properly assist and move body parts for people who are unable to move for themselves. You will also practice feeding a partner, to learn the proper techniques of how to assist others.

This training is great for those thinking of getting into psychology, nursing, personal support worker positions, in a retirement/nursing home and much more!

Training time runs from 9:00am-2:00pm

Lunch is provided.

Intro to Chiropractics: Ethics, Terminology, & Specialized Care
Higher Faster Stronger

Students will learn why Chriropractic care is important in maintaining good health, especially when treating back, neck pain and headaches.
You will learn more while working in groups about how to conduct an intake meeting and assessment with a new client, work through ethical dilemas, and identify components of the spine.

Training time is from 9:00am-1:00pm in the Guidance Room 111 at St. Benedict CSS.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

!!! SHSM will cover the cost of your CPR Level C & Standard First Aid!!!

1. Contact St. John’s Ambulance below to set up a WEEKEND training session
(Check out their online schedule HERE and select “Standard First Aid with CPR C + AED”.

2. You must inform St. John’s Ambulance:
– your name & school
– you’re a student of the Specialist High Skills Major program
– you’re a student with the Waterloo Catholic School Board
– you need CPR Level C & Standard First Aid

3. Attend training on the date you selected.

4. Once you complete the training, St. John’s Ambulance will notify SHSM,
and we will add it to your SHSM record.
