Semester 1

OCTOBER

Stop Motion Animation 101

From movies to video games, TV shows and science simulations; animation enables creators to bring images and objects to life. Stop Motion is a specific animation technique used to make an object or character appear to move on its own.

In this workshop, you will learn the basics of the technique and create your very own stop motion clip.

YOU MUST BRING A SIGNED PERMISSION FORM TO GET ON THE BUS. CLICK HERE TO PRINT THE FORM.

Lunch is provided.
You will earn 1 elective certification.

This is an extended day! Check the timing before committing to signing up!

 

Leadership, Problem Solving & Communication Skills Training

During this one day session, you will work in groups focusing on initiative tasks which include leadership, problem solving & communication to build on these skills. Outdoor education staff will challenge you to understand how these 3 skills are connected, how they affect the workplace and other business situations.
You will also get a chance to participate in low and high rope tasks!

Lunch is provided.
You will earn 1 elective certification.

NOVEMBER 

Portfolio Development Workshop

Your portfolio is an important part of your application to any studio based program. In this intensive workshop we will discuss what makes a strong portfolio, and how to set yourself up for success. Learn some insights and tips on how to make your portfolio stand out.

The workshop will function as a mock interview, individual discussion, group critique and open studio time.

Please bring a selection of artwork and a sketchbook. Limited computers are available. Please bring your own laptop/tablet if possible (if presenting digital files).

You must attend on both days to earn your certifications!

Semester 2

2 DAYS: February 2018
Renewable Energy: Solar Power
Conestoga College – Doon Campus

Interested to learn how Solar Panels are affecting our homes and businesses?
During this hands-on training session will teach you how to install solar panels at Conestoga College. You will complete a panel installation for both flat roofs and sloped roofs. You will also test for safety, learn basic electrical and codes and complete solar PV installation techniques.

Bus leaves before school begins, and returns after school ends.

Lunch is provided.


February 2018
Computer Aided Design (CAD/CAM) Training
Conestoga College, Doon Campus

Are you interested in 2D and 3D computer-aided design and manufacturing?
During this one day session, you will learn more about AutoCAD for use in mechanical drawings. In this session you will create your own completed drawing of an object using the latest version of this software. You will also design a manufacturing toolpath using MasterCAM X9 for the same part to understand how your drawing becomes reality!

Plus! Learn more about how AudoCAD applies to the workplace in today’s industries. You’ll also receive an explanation of manual CNC programming.

You will receive 2 elective certifications towards your SHSM designation.
Lunch will be provided

 

Tuesday March 6, 2018
Working at Heights Certification
Hotzone Training, Cambridge

The Working at Heights training is a requirement from the Ministry of Labour for most construction sites and applies to workers who are required to use a safety belt, safety net, fall restricting or fall arrest system or travel restraint system. Learn about these safety systems and how to protect yourself on the job site!

Prove to your employer you have what it takes to be in this field.

Taxi departs at 8:10am and returns by 5:40pm
Training time is from 9:00am-5:00pm.
Lunch is provided

You will earn 1 mandatory certification.


Wednesday, March 27, 2018
Health and Safety + Confined Space Awareness Training
Hotzone Training, Cambridge, ON

Fact: Employers want to hire safe workers!
During the Health & Safety training, you will learn more about how to keep yourself safe in the workplace. You will also understand what it is like to work in a confined space as you crawl through cement and plastic tubing, while understanding and maintaining safety procedures.

Bus departs at 8:45am and returns by 2:30pm
Training runs from 9:30am-2:00pm.
Lunch is provided!

You will earn 1 mandatory and 1 elective certification.

 

2 DAYS: Wednesdays, April 17 & 24, 2018
Standard First Aid & CPR Level C Training
St. John’s Ambulance, Cambridge

Every employer wants to have a safe worker! Take this certification to learn how to assist other’s when in need. Plus, add it to your resume, as it’ll help you find a part time job! After completing this two day training session you will receive 2 certifications in CPR-C and Standard First Aid.

You must attend on both days to earn your certifications!

Bus leaves at 8:35am and returns by 3:45pm
Training time is from 9:00am-3:30pm on both days
Lunch is provided.

You will earn 2 compulsory certifications.

Summer Training

Take training in your OWN time

HOW DOES IT WORK?

1. Call St. John’s Ambulance below to set up a training session (you cannot register online if SHSM is to pay for the training).

2. You MUST CALL St. John’s Ambulance (do not register online) to inform them:
– your name & school
– you’re a student of the Specialist High Skills Major program
– you’re a student with the Waterloo Catholic School Board
– you need CPR Level C & Standard First Aid

3. Attend training on the date you selected.
*NOTE: You will be charged a fee if you do not attend

4. St. John’s will invoice the SHSM program. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO PAY, and your training will be listed on your progress report by the end of the summer!

– Name, school, major and type of training you’d like to take

3. Complete online training on your own time.

4. Email tara.fitzgerald@wcdsb.ca to confirm you’ve completed training
(Tara will then add it to your SHSM record)
