The Non-profit, Education & Child Care SHSM enables students to develop skills in the areas of problem solving, analysis, communication, cooperation, ethical values, consciousness, and citizenship.

The Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) program in the Education Stream of Non-Profit gives students an opportunity to specialize, gain qualifications, and plan a career pathway in various areas of the Education sector while still in high school. The SHSM Program has a number of required components, designed to give students a “leg-up” to pursue post-secondary opportunities in each of the identified sectors, valuing apprenticeship, college, university and work.

  • A bundle of eight credits in Grade 11 and Grade 12 credits which students earn:
    • Four Non-Profit major credits
    • One English credit
    • One Math credit
    • Two Co-operative Education credits

Co-op:

  • Co-operative Education (Co-op) provides students with workplace experience that enables students to refine, extend and practice sector-specific knowledge and skills.
    • Examples of Non-Profit Education Stream Co-op Placements:
      Elementary School, Daycare Centre, KidsAbility, and more.

Sector Partnered Experience (SPE):

  • The SPE is a 6-hour activity with a career-related sector partner and allows students to work alongside an experienced professional. Students explore sector-related content, skills, and knowledge involving either ICE (innovation, creativity, and entrepreneurship), coding, or mathematical literacy.
